Government approves standard for apprenticeship for entrepreneurs

Young social entrepreneurs to get the opportunity to start well and rise to the top

As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2016 we, alongside our partners, are delighted to announce that the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills has approved the apprenticeship standard for entrepreneurs and social entrepreneurs. The approved standard defines the knowledge and skills that an apprentice will be expected to have, and the behaviours they will demonstrate by the end of their apprenticeship.

Nearly half of people aged 18-30 want to start their own business, with many hoping to make a positive impact on the world – seven in ten (70%) of prospective start-ups are influenced by social causes, while 27% would choose to form a social enterprise. The apprenticeship for entrepreneurs and social entrepreneurs aims give them the skills and experience they need to start-up a venture and succeed.

A ‘trailblazer’ group of over 100 employers and other organisations has spent the last six months developing the standard. The group has pegged the apprenticeship at Level 4, typically being completed in 24 months.

The next step in the process is for an assessment framework to be developed, which will take a few months. We anticipate that the new apprenticeship will be piloted from early 2017. Employers and training providers who are interested in getting involved are encouraged fill in the form below and we'll get in touch with more info.

Employers who take part in the apprenticeship will be able to choose from different educational models - defining how they want to work with apprentices to give them the skills and knowledge they need to become a social entrepreneur.  The models are likely to include:

  • Direct model – the apprentice takes on various roles within the organisation, and is set challenges by the employer which help the apprentice to develop the skills and knowledge they will need to set up their own venture.
  • Incubator model – the apprentices work for an employer, and are also provided with incubation support during the apprenticeship as they get their own ventures off the ground.
  • Franchise model – the apprenticeship prepares the apprentice to replicate the employer’s business model in a new location, possibly through a joint venture or franchise arrangement.
  • Apprenticeship Training Agency model – the apprentice gains experience with multiple employers.

The ‘trailblazer’ group that designed the standard was chaired by Alberto Masetti-Zannini from Impact Hub King’s Cross and supported by UnLtd, along with the Federation of Small Businesses and the Centre for Entrepreneurs. Employers backing the bid include Deutsche Bank and a number of SMEs and social enterprises including Reason Digital, Talentino Careers, Super Being Labs and Simply Do StartUp.

Any employers or training organisations that would like to be involved in the first wave of apprenticeships in 2017, please get in touch via apprenticeships or contact David Pollard, Director of Southern Business Growth Network and chair of the apprenticeship employers group.
